Cookie Pusher

It’s amusing to see adults get excited about buying Girl Scout cookies. Happy is the Girl Scout who has access to a large corporate office. To her go the spoils.

Seriously, this is a great cause. If you’re looking for cookies and don’t know a scout, you can go here to locate one.

Blue Balls: Christmas Gift-making Craze Revisited

Blue balls for my sweetheart

In December, my sweetheart, hoping that I’d find a good use for it, gave me a favored blue sweater that, sadly, clothes moths had ruined.  What to do, what to do with an old, moth-eaten sweater and a scrap wool stash?  Ah, yes.  Christmas ornaments!  My ornaments are modified versions developed from the tutorials at these two links:  The Purl Bee & My Desert Cottage.  Izzy, the cat was very helpful in the gift-making melee.  She kept track of everything for me: anything I was looking for was under the cat.

Save the Internet

http://sopacountdown.com/

This site is protesting SOPA/PIPA, the bills that would close down the free exchange of information on the Internet. This serious threat to free exchange of information would allow sites to be shut down for even the suspicion of copyright infringement, even if those copyright violations are committed by viewers who post comments.

What does this mean? It means the end of YouTube, FaceBook, Flickr, Wikipedia, Twitter, and many other user-supplied content sites.

It means that if somebody disagreed with what you said on a site, all they would have to do is organize a posting of copyright-infringing material in the comments section in order to get the government to shut the site down.

It means that the United States of America will be subject to the same censorship mechanisms as citizens of China.

And they have a good chance of passing, unless we take action NOW. They have heavy backing from the entertainment lobbies.

These bills MUST be defeated, or the Internet as we now know it will be a memory – a memory that we won’t be able to read about online.

Room to Grow II

Black Pearl Amaryllis

Finally it’s after the holidays, and I can start posting all of the presents I made–and grew–without fear of spoiling the surprise.  While I was ordering spring bulbs for a garden

Evergreen - The amaryllis I kept for myself. 12, beautiful cream and light green, star-like flowers on two stalks. The blooms didn't last long and the flower stalks are ridiculously tall.

design job I had in October, I decided that my family would each get a Christmas amaryllis.  Having never tried to grow them before I was a little nervous, but they were a cinch.  I had six bulbs–Flamenco Queen, Picotee, Black Pearl, Evergreen, Prelude and Gervase–and have had tremendous success with them all.  You could, literally, see them grow an inch or more a day.  The photo of Flamenco Queen in Room to Grow was taken on November 30.  By December 2oth she was blooming.

Burlap pot jacket

The bulbs were planted in recycled plastic pots so, with a little design help from Lisa, I made little jackets out of burlap to cover each pot. The burlap is sewn into a tube about 3-4 inches taller than the pot.  A hem with enough room to draw a piece of twin through was then sewn on each end.  The twine was snugged up so that the sleeve fit the pot.  It was Lisa’s idea to leave the bottom open and to use the same  hem/twine design for the bottom that I’d used on the top.

Black Pearl in her new home

I added a ribbon to match the flower to complete the design as well as instructions on caring for the plants.  The instructions included two methods: a: full-on amaryllis care; b: return it to me when it stops blooming and I’ll return it in bloom next Christmas.

Good neighbors

Mom and I were driving home through the country in the dark after our shopping trip, when we approached a stop sign. There was something very large in the road. As I had been watching for deer, my brain shorted out when it finally registered what I was seeing.  All I could say was, “Mom! COWWWWWWS!”

There is a dairy farm on that corner. There were two cows in the road, and many others… all over the place. We drove onto the property, hoping to find somebody. As our car crept slowly through the ever-expanding herd of dairy cows, we finally reached a barn with the light on. The farmer, who was accustomed to the sound of cows, poked his head out the door to see why a vehicle was outside his barn after dark.

We had rolled down the windows to tell him about the cows, but in hindsight it was unnecessary. We shouted, “Your cows are…” and he was shouting for help before we finished the sentence.

As we drove away, we could still hear him yelling. “Nobody knows how to close a gate around here…Cows all over hell…” My mom grinned and said, “You’re welcome,” knowing full well that the man was too shocked and upset to realize how we had helped.

“Mom,” I said, “just be thankful that you weren’t the one who left the gate open.”
